ROUND HILL UTILITY CUSTOMERS: Weather Alert – Protect Your Water Pipes!
Posted on: January 23, 2026 - 2:08pm
The National Weather Service has issued a WINTER STORM WARNING for the region beginning at 11PM Saturday, January 24 through 4AM Monday, January 26. The forecast calls for total snow and sleet accumulations between 12-18 inches. Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing for at least the next nine days.
AVOID FROZEN PIPES:
- Freezing pipes are one of the most expensive risks for homeowners. Pipes that tend to freeze are outdoor faucets and water supply pipes in unheated interior areas like basements, garages, or kitchen cabinets. Water meters are also subject to freezing.
- To help prevent frozen pipes and water meters, take the following precautions: insulate exposed pipes, seal air leaks, keep cabinet doors open to allow warm air circulation, and let faucets drip during extreme cold. Remember to disconnect outdoor hoses, shut off exterior faucets, and know where your main shut-off valve is located.
IF YOUR PIPES FREEZE OR BURST:
- If you turn on your faucets and nothing comes out, then your pipes may be frozen. Melt the frozen water by warming the air around the pipes by opening cabinet doors and using a hair dryer. Start by warming the pipe as close to the faucet as possible, working toward the coldest section of pipe. Make sure the faucet is turned on so melting water can drip out.
- If you notice a leak or pools of water that probably means your pipe has cracked or burst. Immediately turn off the water at the main shutoff valve inside your home, leave the water faucets turned on, and call a plumber.
IF YOUR WATER METER FREEZES:
- If you experience no water throughout your home and it is not a frozen indoor pipe, your water meter may be frozen. Call the Round Hill Utility Department at 540-338-4772 (M-F 7:30AM to 3:30PM) or 540-454-1975 (after hours) if you think your water meter is frozen.
- Please do not open your own meter crock or attempt to thaw it as this can damage your meter.
