Airmont Water Tank Update
UPDATE (December 24, 2025):
Over the last year, the Town has worked with our engineer, staff, and general contractor to complete the new Airmont Water Tank—approximately four months ahead of our original construction schedule. This new tank will provide the following benefits to our community and system:
- Increased Available Fire Flow
- System Reliability and Redundancy
- Improved System Operations and Flexibility
- Ability to take the existing Evening Star Water Tank out of service for critical maintenance.
The Airmont Water Storage Tank will be placed online this week and will be considered fully operational. Customers should not experience any significant impacts to their water service. As part of bringing a new water storage tank into operation, it is common for the system to experience minor changes in water flow and pressure as the system adjusts, and some customers may notice temporarily cloudy or slightly discolored water. This can occur as water flow patterns reverse and the system adapts to two tanks operating together under the updated hydraulic model. These conditions are typically short-lived and should clear on their own.
To place the Airmont Water Storage Tank into service, the Town completed a series of required tests and inspections over the past two weeks, including a Virginia Department of Health inspection, tank disinfection, extensive VOC testing, and multiple inspections by the Town’s engineer, contractor, and Town staff. With the Airmont Tank now operational, the Town will operate both water storage tanks together for several months to complete additional system testing and pressure checks. Following this testing period, the Town plans to take the Evening Star Tank offline during the summer to complete needed rehabilitation work. The Evening Star Tank has been in service for more than 20 years, and this work will ensure its continued reliability for the long term. Once rehabilitation is complete, the Evening Star Tank is expected to be returned to service in early fall 2026.

After breaking ground on the new Airmont Water Tank in December 2024, the Town of Round Hill will begin preparations to start filling the tank in early December 2025. Round Hill’s Project Manager Rob Lohr stated, “Over the last year, the Town has worked with our engineer, staff, and general contractor to complete the Airmont Water Tank. After being blessed with some wonderful weather and a great contractor team, we are now ready to start the process of disinfecting, filling, testing, and putting the new tank in service after obtaining final approval from the Virginia Department of Health. This is approximately four months ahead of our original construction schedule. The new 500,000-gallon tank will be filled gradually over several weeks in December 2025 when demand on the Town’s network of wells is low.”
During this process, utility customers should not experience any significant issues with their service. What is common is the potential for cloudy or slightly stained water from reversing the pressure direction and flow when the tank is being filled. Some customers in higher elevations may also see a slight reduction in pressure but this will only be temporary until the tank is filled.
The Town will then proceed to run the two tanks together to complete test and pressure checks for a period of several months before taking the Evening Star Water Tank offline during the summer of 2026 to complete the routine maintenance work needed at this tank that has been operational for more than 20 years. After this work is completed, the Evening Star Water Tank will be put back in service in the fall of 2026.
This project was funded by Loudoun County Government and the American Rescue Plan Act in partnership with the Town of Round Hill. The new tank will benefit more than 4,600 residents as well as local community organizations, schools, and businesses in the Round Hill Service Area. This new tank will provide the following benefits: system reliability and redundancy; increased available fire flow; and the ability to take the existing Evening Star Water Tank out of service for maintenance. The tank will also include a new cellular corral that will be offered to cell carriers to improve service in the area. The Town is planning a ribbon cutting ceremony next spring.
